Water Spaniel releases new EP

The Delta Music Institute student band Water Spaniel announces the release of “Water Spaniel II” EP on Nov. 8.

Mississippi Delta psychedelic rock band Water Spaniel announces the release of its second EP “Water Spaniel II” on Nov. 8. The follow-up EP contains eight songs and will be released on a variety of formats.

The band’s four members, Jesse Mansfield, Forrest Philpot, Dylan Crouch and Jonathon Hernandez, attend Delta State University and are enrolled in the Delta Music Institute’s Entertainment Industry Studies program.

“Water Spaniel II” was recorded in Studio B of the DMI in September of 2014. The band’s first EP, “Water Spaniel,” was recorded in a short six hours, but the group dedicated three days in the studio to record WSII.

Bassist Jesse Mansfield engineered, mixed and mastered the record.

“It was a long but smooth process over the three days,” said Mansfield. “We were able to add a lot more detail to this one and really work on making a product that we feel sounds professional.”

The featured songs showcase a tighter Water Spaniel, while four additional interludes punctuate the song flow to add an experimental texture and bridge the gaps between an otherwise short release.

In addition to the digital and CD formats, WSII will be released on a limited edition cassette. The band made all of the covers by hand, using felt, empty Kool-Aid Jammers pouches and decorated wood boxes.

“We really like the cassette format because it’s cheap and we can personalize them without many restrictions,” said vocalist and guitarist Philpot. “Believe it or not, we’ve actually sold about 50 of them in the Cleveland area.”

In addition to WSII’s upcoming release, the band also released a free single on its Bandcamp page (waterspaniel.bandcamp.com) on Oct. 30 as a Halloween treat.

“Water Spaniel II” will be available for purchase online and through direct sales from the band beginning Saturday. The release will see a limited pressing of 40 CDs and 40 cassettes that can be purchased by contacting the band through Facebook or email. It will also be available for free download on the Bandcamp page.
