Social work department visits Jackson

Delta State University's Department of Social Work recently participated in Legislative Day hosted by the National Association for Social Workers in Jackson, Miss.

The faculty and students of Delta State University’s Department of Social Work participated in Legislative Day Feb. 12 hosted by the National Association for Social Workers (NASW) in Jackson, Miss.

Approximately 45 students were in attendance for the annual event at the State Capitol. Students engaged in policy advocacy and interacted with peers from across the state, as well as listened to Senate discussions on current legislative issues.

“The importance of students attending Legislative Day is that they learn how to be effective advocates for the social work profession,” said Cora Jackson, instructor of social work at Delta State. “Students learn first-hand how to track and follow bills that ultimately impact their careers and communities.

“They also meet those important leaders both from the profession, but most importantly, legislators from their community, to begin dialogue about issues and concerns affecting them. Finally, students network with professionals and show pride in their university as they represent this institution.”

NASW is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world with 132,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards and to advance sound social policies.
