School of Nursing welcomes high school competitors

President William N. LaForge welcomed a large crowd of high schoolers competing on campus today in the Health Occupation Student Association Northern District Conference.

Delta State University’s Robert E. Smith School of Nursing (RESSON) hosted a large group of competing high schoolers today for the Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA) 2015 Northern District Conference.

Approximately 450 sophomore, junior and senior high school students, organization sponsors and additional chaperones from 26 public school districts in northern Mississippi competed in tests and skills competitions.

The purpose of HOSA is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies for future health professionals through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition.

Delta State University President William N. LaForge hosted opening ceremonies for the large crowd and welcomed the competitors.

During the day, the guests utilized various rooms throughout campus to test and compete in skills events for the opportunity to qualify and compete at the state and national levels for scholarships.

A total of 13 skill events were judged around campus, including clinical nursing, CPR/First Aid, dental science, EMT, home health aid, medical assisting, physical therapy, sports medicine, vet science and more.

The event was cooperatively sponsored by Delta State University and RESSON.
