‘Saturdays in the Park’ on target for ‘Outdoor Recreation’ event

By April 19, 2010General

"Saturdays in the Park” is aiming for another successful event with its upcoming April 24 “Outdoor Recreation” happening scheduled from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Bear Pen Park.

The second program in a four-part 2010 series aimed at promoting the area’s park system while also encouraging participants to embrace outdoor recreation as a healthy life-long lifestyle choice, “Saturdays in the Park” participants will be able to try a variety of activities next Saturday morning.

Participants will be able to try their hand at cane-pole fishing, archery and BB guns, while also enjoying face painting and sidewalk chalk drawing.

An exhibit from the Mississippi Natural Science Museum will be on display, as well as Cleveland Fire Department fire trucks and an Air Evacuation helicopter. Children will have the opportunity to study these different vehicles with hands-on exploration.

When the lunch bell rings, participants can roast their own hot dogs and s’mores over campfires, all while learning the benefits of a waste-free, environmentally friendly lifestyle.

“It promises to be an exciting day of activities, with a little something for everyone,” Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education & Recreation at Delta State University, Dr. John Alvarez assures. “We’ve been so very pleased with the number of participants and turn-out at each of the previous ‘Saturdays in the Park’ events and I really think we are motivating folks to use our beautiful park system more often.”

A collaborative effort between Delta State University’s College of Education and its Health, Physical Education & Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Division of Family & Consumer Sciences, the Cleveland School District, the Cleveland Park Commission and the Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness, “Saturdays in the Park” is an officially recognized by the Healthy Campus/Community Initiative and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.

The event is free and open to all ages.
