Safe Space fosters supportive environment

By November 10, 2014Faculty/Staff
Safe Place training is available each semester to ensure that Delta State University becomes a more inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning people.

In September, Dr. Noah Lelek, assistant professor of theatre and English and Quality Enhancement Plan coordinator, led over 30 faculty and staff in a Safe Space Training.

The Safe Space mission is to ensure that Delta State University becomes a more inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) people by fostering a supportive learning and working environment.

The program is a two-hour training session for faculty and staff who are interested in learning about gender and sexual identity, homophobia, heterosexism, and how they can provide support and work toward being an ally for the LGBTQ community.

Upon completion of the training, participants are issued a Safe Space sticker for their office space as a visible indicator to visitors that they are empathetic and knowledgeable about LGBTQ issues.

The Safe Space training will be offered at the beginning of each semester. Contact Lelek for open training spots in January. Reach Lelek at nlelek@deltastate.edu.
