Pianist Lisa Yui to highlight Art of the Piano event

Renowned pianist Lisa Yui will perform at the annual Art of the Piano event at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Bologna Performing Arts Center, with more events scheduled the following day.

The Delta State University Department of Music will host its annual Art of the Piano event on Feb. 14-15 at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. The program begins Friday at 7:30 p.m. with guest artist and clinician Lisa Yui performing a piano recital featuring works by Beethoven, Debussy and Schubert in the BPAC Recital Hall. 

The recital is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., pianists of all ages from Mississippi and Tennessee will come together for a day of recitals, master classes and workshops centered on making music through the medium of the piano. Delta State piano faculty Karen Fosheim, Kumiko Shimizu and Jung-Won Shin will also serve as faculty for the event.

Described by Pianaste magazine as “a musical phenomenon,” Yui enjoys a multifaceted musical career as a pianist, lecturer, teacher, author and musical director. Since making her concerto debut at the age of seven, she has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia as a recitalist and soloist with orchestras.

She is the top prizewinner of the Senigallia International Piano Competition in Italy, the Super Classics International Auditions in Tokyo, the Toronto Symphony Concerto Competition, the Edmonton Symphony Concerto Competition and the Canadian Consulate Women’s Club Piano Competition in New York. Yui has twice been the recipient of a Canada Council Scholarship.

Yui has worked with such prominent orchestras as the Tokyo Symphony, Polish National Radio, Toronto Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra and the Krakow State Philharmonic. Her performances have been broadcasted on WQXR (New York), CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) national radio, CJRT-FM (Ontario, Canada) and STV (Sapporo, Japan). She has also performed at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and other major concert venues around the world.

She received her bachelor’s degree at the Juilliard School and her master’s and doctor of musical arts degree at Manhattan School of Music. She has served as department chair of the Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard School. Yui currently teaches graduate piano literature and keyboard skills at the Manhattan School of Music and studio piano at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. As a Yamaha Artist, she also maintains a private piano studio in Manhattan.
