Nursing students shine in state convention

The Delta State Student Nurses Association attended the Mississippi Association of Student Nurses in Biloxi, Miss. on Oct. 22-24.

The Delta State Student Nurses Association (DSU SNA) was represented by 29 members at the Mississippi Association of Student Nurses (MASN) in Biloxi, Miss. on Oct. 22-24.

Students Mary Hodges, Kenneth Thomas and Christopher Williams served on the 2013-14 MASN Board, Alyse Malavasi opened the convention by singing the National Anthem, and Amanda King and Williams were panel speakers for the convention.

DSU SNA was awarded the highest honor as the MASN “Nightingale Chapter of The Year.” This is the third year Delta State has received the award.

Michelle Delahoussaye and Kim Patterson were inducted as MASN Hall of Fame members and both were awarded Circle of Excellence Scholarships.

DSU SNA faculty advisor Debra Allen was awarded the MASN “Mentor of the Year.”

“There were about 750 students attending the MASN convention and it was so awesome for Delta State to be honored for the hard work and many service hours the students give to the university, Cleveland and surrounding Delta,” said Allen.

“This experience provided a reward for all their work and allowed them to network with other nursing students,” she added. “Attending state associations allows the students to network and learn that Delta State really is a positive, caring learning environment.”

Association members Tyler Comans, Badel Kalyanji, Sarah Catherine Yawn and Tavelle Marion served as delegates for the convention and each were elected to 2014-2015 MASN Board of Directors positions.
