The Delta State University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. John Wojcik and the Delta State Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Larry Bradford will perform in their annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Delta and Pine Land Theater of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.
The highlight of the evening will be the premiere of “Dum Vita Est” a composition for Wind Ensemble and Choir composed by Delta State music student Stephen Kachenovich of Olive Branch. Kachenovich (nom de plume Kyle Valentine) is a senior music major pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis in piano. He is a student of Dr. Karen Fosheim. Kachenovich most recently orchestrated a musical reduction of the opera, “Maria and Draco,”by Nobuo Uematsu. This reduction was premiered by the Delta State Opera workshop in March, 2010 to rave reviews. Uematsu’s original opera was incorporated into the video game, “Final Fantasy VI.”
The Symphonic Band will take the stage first and open with Elliot Del Borgo’s “Symphonic Sketches.”
Second on the program will be the beautiful “Crown of Thorns”by Julie Giroux. The Symphonic Band will then bring its portion of the concert to a close with “Rollo Takes a Walk” by David Maslanka.
Following a short intermission the Wind Ensemble will take the stage and open with “East Side Fanfare”by Jack Stamp. This is part of a series or fanfares written by Dr. Stamp for the wind band.
Second on the program will be the very rhythmic “Shortcut Home”by Dana Wilson. The time honored Irish “Tune for County Derry”(O Danny Boy) by Percy Graingerwill follow.
Fourth on the program will be the premiere performance of Kachenovich’s “Dum Vita Est.” Joining the Wind Ensemble will be the Delta State Chorale and Delta Singers. The Wind Ensemble will then perform the rhythmic “Arabesque”by Samuel Hazo. As suggested by the title, a distinctive and easily recognizable Arabian flavor permeates the piece. John Philip Sousa’s “Gifted Leadership”march will then bring the concert to a close.
The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band are the two concert band organizations for Delta State. All the students in these groups were members of the marching band during the fall. The Wind Ensemble meets year round and the Symphonic Band meets during the spring semester. The music performed by both groups consists of the best in band literature. Composers represented have won major composition awards or are considered to be the best in their field by band directors world-wide.
The concert is free and open to the public.
