New Fitness Trail to Open at Delta State

By September 15, 2009General

Delta State University will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of a new fitness trail located on the southwest corner of the campus on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. on the corner of Maple and Canal Streets.

The fitness trail opening is part of the new Healthy Campus/Healthy Community Initiative which was announced in June.  The initiative is the direct result of a collaboration between Delta State University and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation which awarded a $700,000 grant to Delta State’s College of Education to spearhead the initiative.

Through this program, Delta State will transform the culture of its campus and become the flagship health and wellness university in the region. The goals of the initiative are not limited to Delta State, however. Delta State’s faculty and students – in partnership with the Cleveland City Schools, the City of Cleveland and the medical community – will work to improve the health and wellness culture of Cleveland and of Bolivar County.

Dr. Leslie Griffin, dean of the College of Education will preside over the ceremonies which will include a welcome from Delta State President, Dr. John M. Hilpert and remarks from Wade Overstreet, Director of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation as well as other Delta State and Cleveland officials.

“We are so very pleased to see this major component of the initiative completed and now become available to all of Cleveland and Delta State University,” said Dean Griffin.

The public is invited to attend.
