The Delta Center for Culture and Learning is conducting the Landmarks in American History and Culture workshop again this year. The workshop is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is titled “The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History and Culture of the Mississippi Delta.”
Forty teachers from 20 states are participating this June, and another cohort of forty will arrive in July. Participants stay in the Delta for six days and use a coach bus as their traveling classroom. Teachers visit Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood, Clarksdale, Memphis, Mound Bayou, Glendora and Ruleville and stop in numerous museums and public places throughout the Delta. They take the stories of the Delta back to their own classrooms.
This is the fifth year that the Delta Center has had support from the National Endowment, and a total of over four hundred teachers will have completed this workshop by the end of this summer. Many of them return to the Delta with their own classes.
