Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service scheduled for April 1

By March 28, 2014Community, VISTA

Leaders at the AmeriCorps*VISTA program at Delta State are asking for immediate assistance to organize a successful Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 1.

Mayors across the nation are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address city challenges. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact — making American cities better places to live.

To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors across the country will participate in the second-annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

On this day, mayors will hold public events and use traditional and social media to highlight the value and impact of national service to the nation’s cities. Last year, 832 mayors representing nearly 100 million citizens participated in the affair.

“We have set a minimum goal of achieving the support of 50 mayors across the state to join us in this endeavor,” said Linda Stringfellow, VISTA director at the Center for Community and Economic Development. “These mayors can provide their support for national service by issuing a proclamation on April 1.”

“They can also sponsor other activities on that day as they desire, but the proclamation is really critical. The Corporation for National and Community Service provides funding for several national service programs in our area, and I am sure our mayors will support this recognition.”

To make this possible, Stringfellow is asking the public to contact local mayors and direct them to the website sign-up page: http://www.nationalservice.gov/special-initiatives/mayors-day-recognition.

“I am asking you to reach out and secure the support of your mayor. We really want Mississippi to shine in a big way.”
