Literacy event returns for second year

The second annual Janie Allen-Bradley Literacy Event takes place Nov. 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the Jacob Conference Center.

The second annual Janie Allen-Bradley Literacy Event takes place Nov. 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the Jacob Conference Center on the campus Delta State.

The event, funded through the Janie Allen-Bradley Literacy Endowment, features Doris Jones of Madison, Miss., a professional storyteller who has opened the world of storytelling and reading to thousands of children.

The event is themed “A Legacy of Literacy.”

Jones possesses a wealth of experience inside the classroom and library, and she teaches and promotes reading while keeping the audience engaged with her animated, interactive style.

She uses both folktales and original stories as springboards to meet curriculum objectives. Caught up in the sound and movement of stories, children are unaware they are learning but are very much aware that they are having fun.

Jones is listed on the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Teaching Artist Roster.

“We’re looking forward to our second annual literacy event honoring Dr. Janie Allen-Bradley, one of our former distinguished reading faculty members,” said Dr. Tim Watkins, coordinator for Elementary Education and Outreach.

The endowment was established in 2012 to honor the veteran literacy professor and to perpetuate her significant work in the area of developing and improving the literacy of young students. Allen-Bradley, or Dr. A-B as former students affectionately called her, served Delta State for 13 years.
