Delta State University’s Fielding Wright Art Center Gallery presents Kristy Deetz: Threads, Folds, and Rabbit Holes: Complex Webs of Making

Threads, Folds, and Rabbit Holes: Complex Webs of Making consists of a series of jacquard weavings based on paintings from Kristy Deetz’s Through the Veil and Holidays Unfolding series. Deetz’s work borrows imagery from pop, outsider, and high culture to examine how images acquire meaning and how that meaning is transformed and augmented by viewers. She frequently uses dark humor, puns, metaphors, and references to art history to draw attention to this transformation. In her paintings, trompe l’oeil renderings of fabrics that form the background to the images allude to the process of weaving together a story, here the complex layering of threads in the jacquard weavings become a metaphor for the construction of meaning.
Kristy Deetz is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin—Green Bay. Her extensive exhibition record includes national and international venues. She co-curated the exhibition FABRICation that traveled to art museums, university art galleries, and art centers. She has received numerous awards for her work and her teaching including SECAC’s 2016 Award for Excellence in Teaching and a 2015 Silver Award from Graphis Design Annual, NY. Most, recently she was selected for an Erasmus Visiting Lectureship at the University of Kassel, Germany, and a residency at The Burren College of Art in Ireland.
