Delta State University recently hosted the American Association of University Women Equal Pay Day on campus.

Participation extended to the community with five local restaurants taking part in Equal Pay Restaurant Day. The restaurants honored a 22 percent lunch discount coupon for all women who ate lunch at their business on April 14.

Participating restaurants included Christina’s Exquisite Edibles, Airport Grocery, Country Platter, Sweet’s BBQ Kitchen and The Senator’s Place.

“We encouraged everyone to wear red symbolizing the day that women’ earnings no longer lagged behind men as of January 2013,” said Dr. Glendscene Williams, associate professor of finance at Delta State and AAUW member.

Teri P. Fleming, senior investigator and outreach coordinator for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission keynoted the event forum, “EEOC: Pay Equity and Equal Opportunities Matter,” on April 14 at the Alumni House. Her discussion focused on pay equity and equal opportunities for women.

The event was in partnership with the Gender Studies Group and the Quality Enhancement Program of Delta State. AAUW members Williams and Dr. Ann Wright, also a Gender Studies Group member, addressed the missions of both programs. Certificates of appreciation were given to participating restaurants.
