DeltaRoX, the Classic Rock band from the Delta Music Institute (DMI), was selected to perform as the opening act for the recently held 4th Annual Grammy U Kickoff event in Memphis.

DeltaRoX, directed by DMI instructor Barry Bays, opened the show with a 20-minute performance of Classic Rock tunes, including “Mississippi Queen,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “The Boys Are Back In Town,” and “Sweet Emotion.”

DeltaRoX band members are students enrolled in courses at the Delta Music Institute, a recording arts and music industry studies program at Delta State University.

This year’s kickoff event held at Harris Hall on the campus of the University of Memphis, was the first of several events scheduled this year for Grammy U students and members of the Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy. Several Grammy U students from Delta State attended the kickoff event in addition to DeltaRoX.

The GRAMMY University Network (GRAMMY U) is a unique and fast-growing community of college students who are pursuing a career in the music industry. The Recording Academy® created GRAMMY U to help prepare students for careers in the recording industry through networking, educational programs and performance opportunities.

GRAMMY U is designed to enhance students’ current academic curriculum with access to recording industry professionals to give an “out of classroom” perspective on the recording industry.

DMI’s Grammy U chapter was formed in the fall of 2008 and now has over 50 members. Currently serving as chapter officers are Greg Cobb, senior of Collierville, Tenn., president; Brian Thomson vice-president; and Vickie Jackson secretary-treasurer of Clarksdale. Faculty advisors for DMI’s Grammy U chapter are instructors Mike Iacopelli and Barry Bays.

The Delta Music Institute is an independent center of study under the College of Arts and Sciences at Delta State. It began with a generous donation by Fred Carl of the Viking Range Corporation in 2003. The focus of the DMI is to provide students with a broad and thorough education in the technological, creative, and business areas of the music and entertainment industry.
