By July 17, 2009General

“Inspiring the Next Generation: Exceptional Mississippi Women,” an exhibit produced by the Museum of Mississippi History will be on display in  the Charles W. Capps Jr. Archives and Museum at Delta State University August 3 through September 25.

Consisting of eight panels, the exhibit introduces thirty-two women who shaped Mississippi and the nation.  Visitors will learn about Mississippi women who held active roles in civil rights, education reform, woman suffrage, and government as well as those who excelled in performance, art, literature, and athletics.

Women have been champions for progress in education, civil rights and social reform.  They have created important art, made significant scientific discoveries, and led this state in political arenas.  Thanks to them, young women of Mississippi today have role models that inspire them to push boundaries and explore diverse opportunities. The legacy of work and determination of Mississippi’s women has just begun to be fully explored, and documented.

A former slave turned international concert performer, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, a five-time Olympian, are just three of the women included in the exhibit.  You will not want to miss this!

The exhibit is free and open to the public.  Museum hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  For more information, please call the University Archives office at (662) 846-4780.
