Delta Statement wins two top AP awards

Elisabetta Zengaro, editor-in-chief of The Delta Statement, recently accepted two awards on behalf of Delta State at the 2015 Louisiana/Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors Contest: College Division.

The Delta Statement, the student-run newspaper at Delta State University, won two awards at the 2015 Louisiana/Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors Contest: College Division.

The LA/MS APME contest is one of the largest regional contests with over 1,000 entries. This year’s judges were from New York. Winners were announced at the awards ceremony held at the Loews Hotel in New Orleans on June 20.

Elisabetta Zengaro, editor-in-chief, won second place in the college editorials category for her editorials “Bradlee: a legacy in journalism,” “The death of journalism at Delta State,” and “One small piece of the pie.”

The judges’ comments were, “It is indeed unfortunate what happened to both the journalism program and student-run newspaper at Delta State. The Statement’s staff did an excellent job in calling attention to the paper’s service to the university, as well as making a strong case for keeping it.”

Tiago Doneux, layout editor, won third place in the category for layout and design. The judges said the front pages Doneux designed were “overall, clean pages.”

Of the five colleges recognized in the contest, Delta State was the only winning university in Mississippi. The other colleges to place were: Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech, Loyola and Southeastern Louisiana University.

“I am very proud of the two awards The Delta Statement won and of the hard work my staff puts in,” said Zengaro. “To be the only university from Mississippi recognized in this contest is a huge victory not only for the Statement staff, but for Delta State University.”

“I think we have continued to show through the distinction The Delta Statement has brought via press awards that students don’t have to attend a larger university to get a quality education,” added Zengaro. “Having led The Delta Statement to many firsts throughout the course of my editorship, I am honored by the recognition we have received and grateful for the opportunities I have had as a result of my studying journalism at DSU.”
