Delta State University to host Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band Concert

The Delta State University Music Department will present the DSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band in concert on Friday, Jan.30,at 7:30 p.m. in the Bologna Performing Arts Center. 

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John Wojcik, will take the stage first, opening with “Canzona” by Peter Mennin, a work featuring fanfare figures, flowing lines and driving rhythms. 

In the second piece, “Children’s March: Over the Hills and Far Away,”Percy Grainger will display his legendary ability to uniquely exploit the instrumentation and sounds of the wind ensemble genre.

“Children’s March”has frequently been performed by bands the world over since its publication in the 1920s. 

Next on the program will bethe beautifully flowing “Sanctuary” by Frank Ticheli. 

The Wind Ensemble will then feature Dr. Shelley Collins, Assistant Professor of Music and Instructor of Flute at Delta State, as piccolo soloist on the Donald Patersonarrangement of Eugene Damare’s “Cleopatra Polka.” 

Twelve members of the Wind Ensemble will then be featured in three movements of “Divertimento”by Gary D. Ziek and bring the Wind Ensemble’s portion of the concert to a close.

Following a short intermission, the Jazz Band under the Direction of Dr. Paul Hankins will take the stage and open with Craig Skeffinton’s “Using the Force. Pig Lickin’Blues”by Jeff Jarvis will follow. 

Third on the program will be “Café Rio,” by David Benoit and arranged by Mike Tomaro. 

The Jazz Band will then conclude the concert with Les Hooper’sCool School Dropout.” 

The Jazz Band will feature a number of its members as soloists throughout their performance.
