Delta State University sponsors book signing for new textbook

By March 19, 2010General

After more than a year of writing and editing by Professors Jerry Robinson, Delta State University, and Gary Green, University of Wisconsin, a new textbook  entitled  “Introduction to Community Development: Theory, Practice and Service Learning,” has been published by Sage Publications of California.

To celebrate, the Delta State University Division of Social Sciences and the Center for Community and Economic Development, will host a book release and signing reception Friday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the Center for Community and Economic Development. Light refreshments will be served.

This new book provides a historical context for Community Development, a theoretical grounding, a critical issues perspective, and the “how-to” for community development.

This collection of work was prepared by 31 nationally known authors, five of whom are at Delta State. The book progresses seamlessly from a theoretical overview to a historical overview of the three approaches to community development (ecological, interactional, and functional); then it explores the practice of community development, along with technical assistance, action research, evaluation research and the role of local organizations, and coalitions.

The book concludes with critical issues, such as rural development, inner-city development, engaging youth in community development, health care, public schools, and sustainable development.
