Delta State to present Shuman and Fosheim in piano duo recital

The Delta State University Department of Music will present guest artist S. Michael Shuman and Delta State Professor of Music Dr. Karen Fosheim in a Piano Duo recital on Tuesday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

 

The event, Suite Sounds and Variations, is the third in a series of Piano Duo Recitals being held by the Department of Music this year.

 

Works on the program are Variations on a Theme by Paganini by Witold Lutoslawski, Fantasy/Suite No. 1 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sonata for Piano, Four Hands by Francis Poulenc, and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, arranged for two pianos by John Musto.              

 

Shuman is a collaborative pianist from Fayetteville, Ark. He is an active collaborator in northwest Arkansas, working with students from the University of Arkansas, theater groups, area musicians, the UA Master Chorale, and the UA Symphony Orchestra.

 

In 2006, Shuman received the Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He received the Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano and Vocal Performance from Delta State University in 2004.

 

As a pianist, Shuman has performed with Honor Choirs sponsored by Delta State University, UNO, the Mississippi chapter of ACDA, and Jekyll Island, Georgia. He has performed as a piano soloist with the UNO Symphony Orchestra. Shuman’s awards in piano include the 2005 Michael J. Ruetz Memorial Award in Music (vocal accompanying) and the 2004 MS MTNA Young Artist. As a singer, he received several awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing as well as an award from the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 2004. His teachers include Dr. James Johnson, Dr. Karen Fosheim, and Dr. Mary Lenn Buchanan.

 

Fosheim, teaches piano and music theory courses, and directs the Community Drumming Ensemble.
