Delta State to Host Fourth Annual O.K.R.A. Summer Day Camp

Delta State University’s College of Education and Human Science’s Healthy Campus/Community Initiative and the Division for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation will host the Fourth Annual Outdoor Kids Recreation and Activity (O.K.R.A.) Summer Day Camp for Delta area youth ages 6-11 from May 27 to June 7, 2013.  Todd Davis, instructor and director of recreation leadership under the Dave Heflin Professorship, will direct the program.

Week one of the camp will be May 27-31 for youth 6 – 8 years old. Week two will be June 3 – 7 for youth 9-11 years old. The camp will operate from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and end at 1 p.m. on Friday.

The O.K.R.A. Summer Day Camp provides youth ages 6 – 11 a week of structured indoor and outdoor recreational activities focusing on developmentally appropriate instruction and fostering active participation in lifelong recreational sports and activities.  Kayaking, disc golf, floor hockey, interactive and team-building games, non-competitive team sports, and other recreational activities are some of the fun activities at camp. The mission of the camp is to provide an active, positive, and exciting environment for youth to participate in a variety of recreational opportunities.

Registration for the camp begins on April 8 at 8 a.m. in the lobby area of the Forest Wyatt Center for HPER. A $40.00 per youth application fee must be paid at time of registration by cash or check only (checks should be made payable to O.K.R.A. Summer Camp). Completed registration forms should be delivered to Becky Roberson in the HPER administrative office on or before May 3rd, 2013.  Registration forms will not be accepted before 8 a.m., April 8. O.K.R.A. Day Camp is directed and supervised by recreation professionals. Each recreation leader is first-aid and CPR certified.  The camp is hosted on the Delta State University campus at the Forest E. Wyatt Center. O.K.R.A Day Camp utilizes many facilities and fields on the Delta State campus including the aquatic center, intramural field, and Quadrangle. Each camper is required to bring a towel, swimming suit, sunscreen, water bottle, and a healthy snack and lunch. A schedule for days that require swim attire will be provided after registration.

Due to staffing ratios of 15-1 and facility use policies, the camp is limited to 180 participants on a *first-come, first-served basis. To enroll a child, you must: fill out an enrollment form (located ONLY in the Forest E. Wyatt Center); sign an informed consent, a youth release-of-liability form,  and complete a lifestyle survey; pay a $40 per youth registration fee (cash or check only); and drop off all registration materials to camp headquarters at the Forest E. Wyatt Center with the division secretary.

*The first 180 applications with fully completed enrollment forms, surveys, and liability waivers, submitted by 5 p.m., May 3, will be admitted. No exceptions will be made for any reason concerning participation capacity.   Campers must be at least 6 before camp starts.
