Delta State presents ‘Out of this World’

By February 4, 2010General

As a part of its "Year of the Arts," Delta State University will present a unique evening of film and music entitled "Out of this World" Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

The evening will include a presentation of the renowned French film-maker Rene Clair’s "Entr’acte," one the first films to explore surrealist cinematography. This brilliantly directed and influential film, made in 1924, features the famous artists Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia, photographer Man Ray, and composer Erik Satie, who also wrote the score. "Entr’acte," which means "Intermission," was originally shown between the acts of a ballet. It’s beautiful, colorful score was the first to be composed frame by frame for a film.

The story line, written by Picabia, was considered revolutionary and is a hilarious satire of the art and society of its time. The influence of this imaginative and innovative cinematography can still be seen in movies today. After nearly a century, the film retains its ability to shock, amuse and entertain its viewer.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Delta State faculty including Assistant Professors of Art Dr. Michaela Merryday and Robyn Moore; Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Leslie Fadiga-Stewart; and Artist in Residence in the Humanities Bruce Levingston. Levingston will also perform the score live on the piano.
