Delta State University Director of Alumni Affairs Jeffrey Farris recently spoke to freshmen participating in a General Studies-100 class about the Alumni Association and the importance of Alumni service. Farris covered topics such as the student alumni association, association publications, and association affinity programs. He also spoke about the association’s use of social media during signature events like Pig Pickin’ and Homecoming.
“It’s very important that students understand that they will have an alumni experience that will last much longer than their student experience. Therefore, the alumni association has to be proactive in involving student engagement,” said Farris.
“The mission of the GST-100 class is to expose incoming freshmen to the resources available at Delta State in order to assist them at being successful in this academic environment,” said Director of Counseling and Student Health Dr. Richard Houston,. “There are 20 sections every fall term servicing freshmen. That is over 300 students a year that we hope will go on to graduate and officially become alumni – helping delta students transform from individual freshmen to productive alumni.”
The class meets at various areas around campus with sessions covering various topics including: Health and Wellness with Todd Davis, Library Skills with Cindy Beardsley, Making the Connection – Using Writing Skills to Reach Out with Dr. Susan Allen Ford, Registration Skills with Suzanne Simpson, Study Skills with Doug Johnson, Financial Awareness Week with Christie Rocconi, and Fatal Vision Goggles with the Delta State Police.
