Winning entries will be published in “Confidante”, the undergraduate creative writing magazine of Delta State, and a long-time publication of the Division of Languages and Literature. Winning entries will also be submitted to the Southern Literary Festival creative writing competition.
In the poetry category, Katie Keene of Leland won first place for “Quod Scripsi, Scripsi,” Samantha Styers of Cleveland won second place for “My Father’s Birthday at Kitty Hawk Pier,” and Jessi Malatesta of Shaw won honorable mention for “Burning the Fields at the End of September.” In the one-act play competition, Malatesta also won honorable mention for her entry, “Discussing Dharma Over Wine.”
In the formal essay category, Michelle Delahoussaye, of Cleveland, won first place for “Farrington: Hungry Like the Wolf,” and Jonathan Smith, of Cleveland, won second place for “‘He’s quite safe’: Jane Austen and Emma Thompson’s Willoughby in ‘Sense and Sensibility.’”Honorable mention goes to Kristen Langerman, of Cleveland, for her essay “Fantasy and Darkness in James Joyce’s Araby.”
In the informal essay category, Zack Malatesta, of Shaw, won both first and second place for his essays “Americanrana” and “The Pond Dweller.”
In the fiction category, Samantha Styers won first place for her story “Queen of the Adriatic,” Kelsey Walker, of Southaven, won second prize for “Rescue Me,” and Landry Barbieri, of Cleveland, won honorable mention for “In His Likeness.”
