Delta State’s Breast Education and Early-detection Project (B.E.E.P.) and My Brother’s Keeper, Inc. (MBK) will host a cancer and obesity prevention training course July 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Community and Economic Development on 1417 College St. in Cleveland.

The interactive workshop will teach participants about adult learning theories and audience facilitation. Participants will also learn basic information about cancer (breast, prostate and cervical) and obesity. The goal of the course is to enhance the participants’ ability to serve as advocates promoting cancer and obesity prevention through education and training.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and there is no charge for the course. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a Certified Health Education Instructor certificate.

To pre-register, contact AmeriCorps*VISTA members Aubreisha Hackler or Sharon Grose at 662-846-4008, or B.E.E.P. project coordinator Gail Bailey at gbailey@deltastate.edu. Space is limited and pre-registration is requested no later than July 14.

B.E.E.P. works to prevent breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by providing innovative and creative approaches in teaching breast cancer awareness and prevention.

The program began in 2007 and is funded through provision of a grant from the Central Mississippi Steel Magnolias Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The project hosts workshops, manages special events and offers screenings (clinical exams and mammograms) to those who are eligible.

My Brother’s Keeper is a nonprofit organization established in 1999 in Jackson. MBK is designed to enhance the health and well being of minorities through leadership in public and community health practices, collaborations and partnerships.
