Campus prepares for second Go Green Weekend

The Delta State University community eagerly awaits the second annual Go Green Weekend, scheduled on campus March 27-29.

The exciting program of activities is sponsored by Delta State’s Office of Admissions, National Alumni Association, Athletics and Student Government Association.

Celebrate the spring season with live entertainment, tailgating, a jambalaya cook-off, athletic games, activities for the family and more. Come out to support the Statesmen and Okra for a weekend of food, fun and sports.

March 28 also doubles as Spring Visit Day — an opportunity for potential students, both high school and transfer, to get a taste of campus. Visitors will be able to directly meet with faculty and staff members, current students and alumni. Those planning to attend are urged to register for the visit online at www.deltastate.edu/gogreenweekend.

Chris Gaines, director of recruiting, said the purpose of Go Green Weekend is to encourage the entire Delta State community to unite and show potential students that Delta State is an outstanding university.

“We want this weekend to build on last year’s success, especially from a student perspective,” said Gaines. “This is a perfect opportunity for everyone to show their support for green and white, and show pride in everything that makes Delta State such a phenomenal institution.”

Student Government Association President Mikel Sykes said the weekend has a little something for everyone, and students are looking forward to this year’s schedule.

“Students had a lot of positive feedback about our first attempt at Go Green Weekend in 2014,” said Sykes. “This year promises to be even better. I really think students and potential students will appreciate that we know how to have fun at Delta State.”

“This wouldn’t be possible without the support from the Union Program Council for organizing and funding activities,” he added.

Events kick off March 27 at 6 p.m. with the jambalaya cook-off at Statesmen Park, followed by live entertainment.

Saturday’s events begin with the Wyatt Golf Classic at 8 a.m. at the Cleveland County Club, followed by the opening of Spring Visit Day at 9 a.m. Tailgating at Statesmen Park picks back up at noon, along with a kids zone and music. The following vendors will also be set up in Statesmen Park: Crustacean’s Crawfish, Domino’s Pizza, Southern Style Snow Cones and Aramark Concessions.

The All-Star Cheerleaders will perform at the park at 1:30 p.m., and awards for the cooking competitions begin at 2 p.m.

Also at 2 p.m., The Statesmen baseball team opens its doubleheader against University of West Georgia at Dave “Boo” Ferriss Field. The second game begins at 5:40 p.m. Lady Statesmen softball takes to the mound for its doubleheader against UWG at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The athletic competitions wrap up on Sunday with Lady Statesmen softball closing out the weekend series at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 2 p.m.
