Winter Weather Updates/Campus Closures

2.21.21 Update

Delta State University will resume normal operations on Monday, Feb. 22, 2021. University offices will open at 8 a.m., and classes will be held as scheduled. As roads continue to clear, faculty, staff and students should remain alert and exercise caution when traveling to campus.  Those traveling from out of town should check with local and state officials regarding road conditions and should use good judgment when making decisions regarding travel.

2.19.21 Update

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, Cleveland remains under a hard freeze warning until noon on Friday, and the threat for winter weather continues today, with impacts from the winter storm persisting.

Temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night and Friday night into the teens across the Delta region along with single digit wind chills. Power outages and tree damage may occur. Light freezing drizzle and additional light icing of bridges is expected. Those in affected areas should continue to avoid traveling, if possible.

Due to this continued weather threat, and in the interest of safety and an abundance of caution, Delta State University will close on Friday, February 19.  All classes, including night classes, are canceled for Friday, and the university will be closed for business operations. Essential service personnel should check with their supervisor to determine if they need to report on Friday. Employees who are uncertain about their work schedule should check with their supervisor.

Residence halls and the cafeteria will be open and will follow normal hours of operation.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Bolivar County that is in effect from 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 until 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18.

According to the NWS statement, heavy freezing rain, sleet and possible snow are predicted to impact the Delta region with additional ice and snow expected to add to existing wintry accumulations. Power outages and tree damage may occur due to the ice. The conditions have also created slick spots on roadways, mainly on bridges and overpasses. Those in affected areas should avoid traveling, if possible. If you must travel, you are advised to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Delta State University campus will remain closed for faculty, staff and students on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Thursday, Feb 18. Residence halls and the cafeteria will be open and will follow normal hours of operation. To the extent possible, employees are to “work from home.” Students are to attend classes virtually and are expected to continue their coursework unless experiencing a power outage or internet connectivity issues due to the storm.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Bolivar County that is in effect from noon today through Tuesday.

According to the NWS statement, heavy mixed precipitation is expected to impact the Delta region with snow and sleet accumulations of up to six inches and ice accumulations of up to a half-inch. Power outages and tree damage may occur due to the ice. Cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero could result in hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken. The conditions have also created slick spots on roadways, mainly on bridges and overpasses. Those in affected areas should avoid traveling, if possible. If you must travel, you are advised to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, the northwest portion of the Mississippi Delta will continue to see intermittent freezing rain and low temperatures on Friday and into Saturday.

Trees are currently heavy with ice in some areas, and freezing rain is expected to add to the accumulation. The conditions have created slick spots on roadways, mainly on bridges and overpasses. Those in affected areas should use caution while driving, especially after midnight as ground temperatures are expected to stay below freezing. Downed tree limbs and power outages may also occur.

2.10.21 Update

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued an Ice Storm Warning for  Bolivar County that is in effect tonight through Thursday.

According to the NWS statement, significant icing is expected with ice accumulations of one tenth to three tenths of an inch possible. The conditions will create slick spots on roadways, mainly on bridges and overpasses. Those in affected areas should be prepared for slippery roads and use caution while driving. Downed tree limbs and power outages may also occur.
