Volunteers for the Breast Education and Early-detection Project (B.E.E.P.) were recently honored for their contributions to the project during 2014-2015. Recognition was given Feb. 10 during a meeting of the B.E.E.P. Advisory Committee at the Center for Community and Economic Development on the campus of Delta State.

The B.E.E.P. project is a community based breast health program that is funded by the Central Mississippi Magnolia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to raise awareness of breast cancer, breast health and the importance of early detection. The project targets three counties — Bolivar, Washington and Sunflower in the Mississippi Delta. The project also provides breast health education workshops and funding for clinical exams and mammograms for under-insured or uninsured women.

The Advisory Committee advises the project and serves as advocates from the local communities. The committee helps B.E.E.P. staff with project priorities, provides feedback on any community activities held in the areas served by the project and gives insight on additional resources. Members of the committee in attendence were Dr. Betty Sylvest, Robin Boyles, Phyllis McCalop, Dr. Beverly Moon and Ezell Landrum.

Gail Bailey, B.E.E.P. project coordinator and Aubreisha Hackler, B.E.E.P. AmeriCorps*VISTA member, were also thanked the volunteers for their support.
