Fireside Chat – March 18, 2019 – Spring for Success Online Giving Days

Joining President LaForge to talk about the three projects for Spring for Success Online Giving Days are Dana George, Chief Jeffrey Johns and Jana Donahoe.

Delta State University Foundation’s inaugural Spring for Success Online Giving Day is set for March 20 and will raise money for three microgrants that benefit the campus in different ways. The idea is for donors to give to the specific project or projects that interest them. A committee chose three worthy projects from more than 20 submissions. Here are some numbers on the three chosen projects.

•The Statesman mascot costume is in dire need of refurbishment.
•The Statesman was selected as the official mascot in 1975, when 625 out of 948 students, faculty and alumni voted on the ballot.
•The campus police department’s body armor safety initiative wants to raise money to replace their officers’ bulletproof vests.
•Based upon data collected by the Office of Justice Programs, from 2015 to 2017, protective vests were directly attributable to saving the lives of at least 129 law enforcement and corrections officers.
•The social work department’s virtual dementia tour has offered a mindful simulation, the Virtual Dementia Tour, to students, faculty, and staff. The tour gives participants a glimpse of what it is like to experience the cognitive and physical impairments that people with dementia commonly experience.
•More than 5.7 million Americans live with dementia while 16.1 million Americans provide unpaid care for them at a cost of upwards of $232 billion.
