Delta State University Welcomes Its First Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Legal Expert Katarzyna Mackowska of Lublin, Poland

Delta State University welcomes legal expert Katarzyna Mackowska of Lublin, Poland, as its first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence. An associate professor and chair of legal history in the Faculty of Law, Canon Law, and Administration at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, she is teaching two political science courses during the spring 2019 semester. A practicing attorney who focuses on criminal law, Mackowska also is researching local democracy.

“The opportunity to host a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence is a great honor for the Division of Social Sciences and History,” said Chuck Westmoreland, chair and associate professor of history. “Dr. Mackowska’s courses, Judicial Processes and Democratic Thought, will be of great benefit to our students. Her vast expertise will expand students’ understanding of how the law and ideas shape not only American politics but global politics as well.”

Mackowska—who earned doctoral and law degrees at her alma mater, who has won awards for her teaching, and who is a prolific author in her field—is enjoying teaching and learning at Delta State. “I am so happy to be here in Cleveland at Delta State and am fortunate to be able to be here as a Fulbright Scholar,” she said. “I look forward to learning about the culture of the Mississippi Delta, and I hope to share some insights and experiences from back home in Poland. I have researched judicial systems and democracy for years, and I think I will bring a special perspective to the students as they learn about these ideas from an international professor.”

Delta State Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Charles McAdams agreed. “I am confident her teaching and interaction with students, faculty, staff, and community members will leave a lasting and positive impact on the Delta State community,” he said. “Dr. Mackowska’s residency underscores our commitment to provide international experiences and perspectives to our campus. I hope everyone will find an opportunity to interact with our Fulbright Scholar at some point during the semester.”

Delta State began working on hosting a guest instructor through the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program in fall 2017. The application was approved in February 2018. Delta State immediately then began preparations to bring Mackowska to campus, explained Dr. Jamie Dahman, assistant professor of music and the Delta State Fulbright Scholar liaison and program adviser.
