Department of Music presents Flute Day

Guest artist Sandra Saathoff (left) will join Delta State's Dr. Shelley Collins for Flute Day April 23.

The Delta State University Department of Music presents Flute Day on April 23.

High school and community college flutists will be on campus to join the DSU Flute Studio for a day of flute clinics and performances, culminating in a final group flute choir concert. The guest artist will be Sandra Saathoff, professor of flute at Seattle Pacific University and principal flutist of the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra.

At 2 p.m., Saathoff will be joined by Delta State faculty Dr. Shelley Collins (flute), Dr. Kumiko Shimizu (piano), and Don Allan Mitchell (narrator) for a faculty recital at the Bologna Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The recital will feature duet and solo works, including the famous “Flower Duet” by Delibes, a piece for flute and narrator, Doppler’s crowd-pleasing “Andante and Rondo,” and a work for piccolo and alarm clock.

At 5:30 p.m., Collins and Saathoff will conduct the students in a final concert. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

This event is sponsored in part by the Bryce Griffis President’s Endowment Fund. For more information about the recital, contact the Department of Music at 662-846-4615 or visit shelleycollins.com/fluteday.
