Fashion merchandising students win at state meeting

Student Ashton Roach, left, recently won first place in the Apparel Design competition at the Mississippi Association of Family and Consumer Sciences conference. Shanice Cox received third place in the same category.

Two Delta State students shined bright at the recent Mississippi Association of Family and Consumer Sciences conference.

Ashton Roach won first place in the Apparel Design competition, and Shanice Cox received third place in the same category.

The annual conference is attended by about 100 people from around the state. The apparel design competition is open to university students in the areas of clothing, textiles and merchandising.

“Many of the designs this year promoted repurposing and sustainability, in addition to being creative and fashion forward,” said Dr. Jan Haynes, professor of fashion merchandising at Delta State. “Students have the opportunity at the meeting for networking with other students and professionals in the field.”

The Mississippi Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is the state arm of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, an organization with over 100 years of history.

The association serves to provide leadership and support for professionals whose work assists individuals, families and communities. Members are educators, counselors, nutritionists, dietitians, scientists, researchers, designers, administrators, consultants and more.
