Community Development Student Organization helps with cleanup

Cheryl Beaty, new president of the Community Development Student Organization, will help build cleanup efforts across campus.

Delta State’s phrase “Go Green” will have more than one meaning again, as the university is bringing back its Community Development Student Organization in order to help keep campus clean.

The group will help cleanup efforts by bridging the gap between students and the community.

Dr. Hui Liew, a first year social science department professor, felt it was vital to bring back an organization like this to Delta State. After she received the rights to start the organization, she sought the help of then community development graduate major Cheryl Beaty. Beaty is now the senior secretary for Department of Music.

“Dr. Liew approached me because I was a first-year student in the community development program,” said Beaty, president of the new organization. “There were other students in the program as well, but with the program being a graduate degree, many of the students were not on campus and were not available to help.”

While the community development program has stayed active, a branch of the program was cut back in 2010.

“What we are doing with the organization is now allowing undergraduates and non-majors to join,” said Beaty.

The organization already has 18 members in just over a month since its revival.

“It’s great that so many have joined already,” said Beaty. “But the current goal is to get as many students involved in this organization as we can.”

The first activity the group participated in was the Cleveland Cleanup held downtown April 11.
