Campus Internet connection quadruples in speed

Delta State's Office of Information Technology announced campus Internet has recently quadrupled in speed.

Delta State University’s Office of Information Technology recently announced major upgrades to the institution’s Internet bandwith. The new connection, now more than four times faster than the previous speed, is providing campus with a much-improved high speed connection.

According to Edwin Craft, OIT Chief Information Officer, all users on campus should experience faster Internet browsing. He has already heard praise for the upgrade, as the changes provide Delta State with some of the best connectivity available.

“Campuses have become dependent on Internet access for normal operations, and it is no longer a luxury to have reliable high speed Internet for students, staff and faculty of the university — it is a necessity,” said Craft. “Providing the new connection for the campus has been in planning since January of 2014.”

Craft said OIT has been monitoring the connection closely to make sure there were no unforeseen issues with the upgrade.

“OIT technicians have visited various locations on campus to test connectivity, monitor link connection speeds, and talk with individuals around campus to verify that the new connection is working as planned.”

“Many times latency on an individual computer can be caused by viruses or malware. If you are experiencing issues, try running a virus and malware scan on your computer to make sure that your computer is not infected. If you need an antivirus or malware program for your personal computer, there are some free options that may help at www.deltastate.edu/antivirus.”

Students have also praised the speed increase.

“I’ve definitely noticed the improvement in speed,” said senior Briana Williams. “It’s made an impact for me because I’m a graphic design major. I really need a fast connection when working with some of my bigger files.”

Senior Robert Ivy compared new upload and download speeds and said the difference is extremely impressive.

“I can get online and search the Internet at high speed with no problems at all,” he said. “The uploading and downloading speeds have gotten drastically faster. It’s faster through the wireless connection, but it’s really noticeable with the Ethernet connection.”
