We the People teach power and freedom

"We the People" performed Wednesday at the Bologna Performing Arts Center as part of the School-Time Matinee Series.

Theatreworks USA presented “We the People” Wednesday to over 1,100 students at the Bologna Performing Arts Center on the campus of Delta State. Local school district students from over five surrounding counties were encouraged to speak up as they explored the constitution of the United States during the high-energy musical revue.

We the People tells the story of a 14-year-old girl named Dawn Shapiro, portrayed by actress Alina John, who is running for student council president at her school. In an effort to help Dawn with her nomination speech, she is visited by the four founding fathers of the United States: John Adams (Matthew Koplik), Benjamin Franklin (Nick Giedris), Thomas Jefferson (Mike Dorsey) and George Washington (Tyler Milliron).

Throughout the performance the characters go on a musical journey to explore the aspects of the First Amendment, such as speech, religion, press and assembly. With the help of the Founding Fathers, Dawn discovers that power comes with responsibility, and learns that even with the strongest power, balance and order are necessary.

The main focus is that American citizens are the ones with the power.

After the performance, three 10-year-old elementary students from Parks Elementary School shared their thoughts about the show.

“I learned that there are 27 amendments in the constitution and that I should speak up for what I want,” said Piper Holley.

Michaela McDonald said she learned that many things have to be done in order for a person to run for office.

“I thought the show was great and I learned that there are many types of freedom,” said Hannah Brown.

Several upcoming educational performances will be featured throughout the school year as part of the Bologna Center’s School-Time Matinee Series. On Dec. 4, students will have the opportunity to ring in the holiday season with “Mooseltoe, A New Moosical,” sponsored by Entergy. On Feb. 10, 2015 the Bologna Center will present “The Berenstain Bears LIVE,” sponsored by Monsanto.
