By May 29, 2014Alumni, Community
The Delta State University Alumni Association will follow tradition and attend Mississippi in the Park events in New York City, Atlanta and Washington D.C. this summer.

The Delta State University Alumni Association has announced its summer picnic travel schedule. Alumni Association staff will visit New York City, Atlanta and Washington D.C. for the annual Mississippi picnics this June.

The 35th annual New York-Mississippi picnic in Central Park is June 14 from noon-6 p.m. This year’s event will be held at Center Road at the 72nd Street and 5th Avenue entrance, which is between the Naumberg Bandshell and Sheeps Meadow. This year’s theme is “Mississippi Homecoming in Central Park,” and Marty Stuart and the Superlatives will headline the event. For a full schedule of events, visit the group’s website www.thenyms.org.

The Mississippi Society of Georgia’s annual Mississippi in the Park is June 14 at Chastain Park. The picnic is from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There are a variety of activities planned this year, including a golf tournament and an Atlanta Braves game. The group will also award a scholarship for a Georgia resident who will be attending a Mississippi school in the fall. For more information on this event, visit the society’s website www.mssocietyofga.org.

The 24th annual Mississippi on the Mall will be held June 21 in Washington D.C. at Henry Bacon Drive Ball Field, located at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Live music will be provided and fried catfish will be served. For more information, visit www.mississippisociety.org.

Scholarship funds have been established for all three areas. To donate to the scholarship funds, or to RSVP for the events, visit the event’s page at www.deltastategiving.org/alumniassociation. Each picnic also has a Facebook event page under Statesmen Graduates.

Each picnic will have representatives from Mississippi, including the majority of the state’s public and private institutions of higher learning. Delta State will have representatives from campus to provide updates, promotional items, information from admissions and other campus departments, and much more. This also provides an opportunity for alumni to connect with their alma mater and refer a student to attend Delta State.

In true Magnolia State fashion, fried catfish and sweet tea will be served at all three events. The picnics celebrate all things Mississippi and give native Mississippians in the area a chance to get a little piece of home in the big city.
