Tom Pittman, president of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, presented the Bologna Performing Arts Center with a $3,000 grant check on Tuesday for continued support to the School-Time Matinee Series. Thanks to the CFNM grant, students from Coahoma, East Tallahatchie, Quitman and West Tallahatchie counties were able to attend the Black Violin Trio matinee performance Tuesday at the BPAC.
The School-Time Matinee Series has hosted more than 8,000 local students throughout the 2013-14 school year, and has given students from across the Delta an opportunity to experience a variety of artistic and educational performances.
The CFNM connects people who care with causes that matter. It assists donors as well as nonprofit organizations and charitable causes that make a difference in people’s lives. While donors designate their charitable contributions, the foundation has set its priorities as education, health and children in order to make the greatest impact on its community.
Whitney Cummins, BPAC Arts Education coordinator said she was thrilled about the CFNM support.
“We are excited to partner with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi for the third consecutive year,” said Cummins. “Through this generous grant, we are able to provide students from Northwest Mississippi with the opportunity to experience professional theatrical productions by removing the ticket cost barrier.”
More than 800 students from throughout the Delta filed into the BPAC Tuesday for the violin performance, which featured classically trained musicians who combine the elements of classical and hip-hop to produce a truly unique sound. Students ranging from pre-K to 12th grade were dancing and clapping along to the infectious beats.
Violinists Kev and Wil B spoke in between songs about the importance of music education.
The next scheduled school-time matinee is April 8, as the BPAC presents New Stage Theatre’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” sponsored by Entergy. Performances are scheduled for 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.
