Diabetes, child development and resource programs funded

Delta State’s College of Education and Human Sciences has received three grants from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi for program development.

The Division of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) received funding for a nutrition program titled “Mission Coahoma in Control: Diabetes Self-Management Program.”

“The purpose of the program is to provide Coahoma County citizens who have diabetes or are at-risk for diabetes with a monthly education program related to diabetes care or education,” said Dr. Jan Haynes, division chair.

FCS also received a child development grant for funding a program called “Quality Training for Early Childhood Professionals.” The program will serve to develop a model classroom for early childhood educators to observe and to provide professional development trainings for early childhood professionals in the Delta.

The Division of Field Experience received a $10,000 grant to fund a program entitled “Resource-Rich: The Mississippi Delta.”

“The purpose of this grant is to educate teachers and teacher candidates about the richness of resources in the Mississippi Delta which, in turn, will impact the students of Mississippi Delta schools,” said Cheryl J. Cummins, director of Field Experiences.

The Office of Institutional Grants provided assistance in securing these grants. Jen Waller with Coahoma County Higher Education Center also provided input on the diabetes grant.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi was founded in 2002 as a non-profit organization serving 10 counties in Mississippi by connecting people who care with causes that matter. According to its website, the group helps “create permanent charitable funds of everlasting impact, whether they focus totally on the local community or include charitable interests throughout the United States.” Delta State is a past grantee of the foundation.

Dr. Leslie Griffin is the dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences and strives to achieve the college’s mission for creating a stimulating, positive environment that provides students with professional faculty who emulate and model the profession competencies and skills.
