Campus clarinet talent

The Delta State University Department of Music will present Courtney Wier in her senior clarinet recital on Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Wier, a clarinet major from Olive Branch, is the daughter of David and Vicki Wier. She studies with Dr. Bret Pimentel, assistant professor of music at Delta State University. Since entering Delta State in 2010, Wier has been involved and performed with the Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Clarinet Ensemble and Delta Singers. She has been principal clarinetist for the Delta State Wind Ensemble from 2011-2013. She has been awarded the Jeff Ross Capwell Scholarship and William-Winters Scholarship multiple times and has been inducted into Pi Kappa Lamda. Wier is also involved with Mu Phi Epsilon, serving as chorister in 2012 and current president for the fraternity.

She recently participated, along with fellow clarinet students, in a masterclass with Dr. Jackie McIlwain, visiting assistant professor of clarinet at the University of Southern Mississippi. McIlwain performed a guest recital after receiving an invitation to campus by Pimentel.

Wier will be performing compositions by Mozart and Gershwin. The recital is free and open to the public.
