Humanities Council Honors Teachers

The Mississippi Humanities Council wrapped up its 40th anniversary celebration last Friday, March 22, with an awards luncheon in Jackson.  One teacher from every college and university in the state was honored as a Humanities Teachers of the Year.  Delta State’s recipient this year was historian Charles Westmorland.  James Leach, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and former US Congressman presented the keynote address.  Other honorees included Dr. Marie Danforth (Humanities Scholar), Carla Falkner (Humanities Educator), Dr. Rick deShazo (Humanities Partner), Peggy Jeanes and Dr. Judy Dalgo (Preservers of Mississippi Culture), and Mississippi Public Broadcasting and Tito Lanier (Special Recognition Awards).  Luther Brown, Director of the Delta Center for Culture and Learning, is currently the Vice-Chair of the Mississippi Humanities Council.
