If you are shopping or having lunch along the Cotton Row around noon next Tuesday, December 11, you will likely hear the “holiday harmonizing” of some of the faculty and students in the Department of Music at Delta State University. Spearheaded by the vocal music area , the traveling troupe will sing traditional Christmas holiday songs along the Cotton Row, beginning outside of the Starving Musician Bakery on the west side of the downtown district.
Singers are not the only musicians in the music department with the holiday spirit, as a low brass combo will be playing familiar tunes around Cleveland as well. In addition to several locations across campus, including pre-concert music for the “Delta Holiday” extravaganza at the BPAC on Sunday , December 9, the group will visit a few schools and shopping areas, too. On Saturday, December 8, they will be treating gift buyers at Wal Mart and patrons of the Starving Musician downtown to some seasonal entertainment as well . To round out their tour of the town, the instrumentalists will give a special holiday performance for the folks who reside at Indywood Estate. The group is directed by Dr. Douglas Mark, assistant professor of music.
Dr. Mark Butler, interim chair of the department, commented, “these caroling activities echo the spirit of service being celebrated at Delta State this year. Our music students and faculty are ‘giving back’ to the Cleveland community during the holiday season by spreading some good cheer and inspiration using their personal talents.”
