Brent Langston, of Southaven, the 2012 recipient of the Doug Schooler Memorial Baseball Scholarship at Delta State University, and Mike Kinnison, Delta State University Head Baseball Coach, recently presented flowers to Mrs. Anna Schooler in appreciation of her scholarship endowment. In 2001, Schooler initiated the Doug Schooler Memorial Baseball Scholarship in memory of her son. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding baseball player at Delta State University.
Doug Schooler graduated from Withrow High School in Ohio and served in the U.S. Army for three years in Germany. He graduated from Delta State College in 1967 with a degree in business administration. While at Delta State, Schooler played baseball under Coach Dave “Boo” Ferriss, was named to the Dean’s List, and served in campus clubs. Upon graduation Doug joined the staff of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.
“One day Doug noticed a lump in his shoulder,” said Mrs. Schooler, a native of Shelby. “After a lengthy battle with cancer he passed away at the age of 27 on September 9, 1968.” Doug was her only child.
“My family and I are so grateful to receive the scholarship in memory of Doug Schooler who was an amazing baseball player, student and person. I hope I can someday be half the man Doug was,” said Brent. With tears in her eyes, Mrs. Schooler told Brent how proud Doug would be of him.
“Memorial and honorary scholarships are certainly financially beneficial to our baseball program,” said Coach Kinnison. “More importantly, they allow a personal connection within our baseball family, especially with wonderful people like Mrs. Schooler.”
“The Delta State University Foundation recently announced a $15 million Scholarship Initiative,” said Ronnie Mayers, interim athletic director. “I invite everyone to consider how they can support the athletic program at Delta State by making a scholarship gift in memory or in honor of a loved one.”
