Delta State University alumni recognized for philanthropic efforts

Delta State University alumni Dr. Bob and Sylvia Ferguson and Mrs. Helen Brock Napier were recently honored as “Community Champions” as part of National Philanthropy Day sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Helen Brock Napier was nominated by Community Place for which she has been a board member for 14 years.  A native of Drew, she has received numerous awards for community service and was honored by the Mississippi Legislature in 1998 for outstanding service to the state as an official with the State Banking Department and for her work improving professionalism in the regulation of consumer finance industry.  Napier was instrumental in starting the school for examiners in Washington, DC.

Dr. Bob Ferguson and his wife Sylvia, both of New Albany, co-founded the Tri State Educational Foundation in 1998 and have provided more than $6 million in scholarship and grant moneys to support the educational needs of students who reside within a 50 mile radius of Iuka to further their education in their choice of higher education institutions nationwide. The Tri State Educational Foundation is also partnering with Delta State University through the Division of Teacher Education within the College of Education to support teachers in Tishomingo County in attaining the Master of Elementary Education Degree.  The foundation also provides financial support through scholarships and various programs to Delta State’s College of Arts and Sciences.
