The Delta State University Department of Music will present Dr. Douglas Mark, assistant professor of low brass, in a faculty recital on Tuesday, September 25, at 7:30pm in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.
Mark will be assisted by Dr. Jung-Won Shin, assistant professor of piano. The program, entitled “The Lyrical Trombone,” will feature compositions that exploit the lyric and majestic beauty of the trombone. The first selection on the program is “La Femme a Barbe” (The Bearded Lady) written by French composer Jose Berghmans. It is one of a collection of works that depicts various sideshow scenes found in a traditional carnival. This will be followed by “Concerto for Alto Trombone and Piano, op. 9, No. 2” by Tomaso Albinoni. The composition was originally composed for oboe and orchestra. Dr. Mark will conclude the first half with another transcription, Franz Strauss’ “Nocturno, Op. 7,” originally written for horn. |
| The second half of the performance begins with “Romance for Trombone and Piano” by Danish composer Axel Jorgensen. This will be followed by “Concerto for Trombone and Piano” by contemporary French composer Ida Gotkovsky. The evening recital concludes with a work by American composer Dan Aldag, entitled “Wotda.” Mark provides instruction in applied low brass, and directs the DSU brass ensemble. He has held similar positions at the Hochstein School of Music, Hamilton College, Nazareth College, and Colgate University, all located in western NY. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mark has performed with several orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Locally, he has performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Tupelo Symphony and the Delta Symphony. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts. An advocate of community music projects, Dr. Mark has participated in the NEA Chamber Music Rural Residency in Liberal, KS. He has performed internationally in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Taiwan. The recital is free and open to the public.
