CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University Delta Center for Culture and Learning welcomed 40 teachers representing 20 states to its July workshop series this past weekend. The series titled "The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History and Culture of the Mississippi Delta" is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and gives participants an intensive, week-long, exploration of the heritage of the Delta.
Applications came from 47 states, and more than four times as many people applied as could be accepted. A welcoming reception was held at the Martin and Sue King Railroad Museum. Sponsors included Cheryl Line of the Tourism Committee of the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce, Homer Sledge of the Cleveland Nehi Bottling Company, Robert Heslip of Cecil’s Liquor Store, the Parlor Pearlers of Calvary Episcopal Church, Rachel Tate, Gregory Cole, Asa Atkinson, and Eddy Causey.
