CLEVELAND, Miss – Husband and wife educators, Dr. Scott Hutchens, professor of psychology and chair of the Division of Counselor Education and Psychology at Delta State University, and Beth Hutchens, a third-grade West Bolivar Elementary School teacher, presented a research paper at the 33rd annual meeting of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) on June 25 in San Diego, California. ISTE’s annual conference and exposition is the world’s premier educational technology event (formerly the National Educational Computing Conference, NECC). Each year over 20,000 educational technology professionals and corporate representatives from around the globe unite for five days of professional learning, collaborating, and hands-on demonstration of the best new instructional technologies.
The Hutchens’ research paper, entitled From Elementary to College: Effective Use of Student Response Systems, investigated student perceived benefits and best practices for the use of Student Response Systems (SRS) in college classrooms. The paper also proposed a similar study to investigate best practices and student perceived benefits of SRS use in elementary classrooms. A Student Response System is an instructional technology that allows each student to express his or her views/opinions and submit answers to in-class questions in anonymity. The cumulative view of the class immediately appears on a public screen. This allows for instantaneous assessment of student understanding and opinions which serves to increase student engagement and learning.
