Delta Center hosts summer workshop

By June 28, 2012General

Participants in The Delta Center for Culture and Learning workshop “The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History and Culture o the Mississippi Delta” gather for a reception at the Martin and Sue King Railroad Museum.

The Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University welcomed forty teachers to its first 2012 summer workshop titled “The Most Southern Place on Earth:  Music, History and Culture of the Mississippi Delta.”  An opening reception was held Sunday, June 24, at the Martin and Sue King Railroad Museum in Cleveland, and was supported by the Nehi Bottling Company, Cecil’s Liquor Store, and the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce.  The knitting club of the Calvary Episcopal Church, together with several local citizens, provided hors d’oeuvres.

This is the first of two workshops that the National Endowment for the Humanities is funding through the Delta Center.  Applications came from 47 states this year, and four times as many people applied as could be accepted.  Participants spend six days exploring the Delta’s rich cultural heritage, listening to guest speakers, sampling the Delta’s cuisine, and soaking up as much Blues music as they can find.  For more information, contact the Center at 662-846-4311, lbrown@deltastate.edu.
