Shure Incorporated recently announced the winning recording teams that participated in its eighth annual Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition. Students from the Delta Music Institute at Delta State University earned honorable mention behind the winning students teams from Middle Tennessee State University and New York University.

Team members representing the Delta Music Institute of Delta State University were: Travis Calvin of Clarksdale, Horace Willis of Arcola, Matthew Coleman of Pearl, Curtis Nunnery of Smithdale, and Laietta Wade of Greenville.

The competition offered student musicians and audio engineers from ten music industry programs across the nation the opportunity to record a project with the same high-quality gear used by professional musicians and engineers.

The Delta State students spent three months planning, recording, and documenting an audio recording project. The team selected an original song, “Now What Do We Do?” to record in the DMI Studios. The song was written and performed by DMI Director Tricia Walker, and the recording featured Dr. Bret Pimentel from the DSU Music Department on tenor saxophone.

“We are so proud of these music industry students,” remarks DMI Director Tricia Walker. “They put in an enormous amount of hours preparing for, executing and documenting the work required for this competition, and their hard work paid off.”

Entries were judged by a panel of renowned musicians and industry professionals who considered overall fidelity, clarity, sonic balance, and creativity in microphone selection and placement in their evaluations. For their efforts, the DSU students each received a pair of Shure SRH840 headphones, valued at $250 each.

Other schools and universities competing included: Clemson University, DePaul University, New England School of Communications, Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, University of Miami Frost School of Music, University of the Pacific, and William Paterson University.
