Delta State Psychology Students Win Research Competition

DeAron Washington presenting his winning research poster at the Mid-South Psychology Conference.Delta State University psychology students DeAron Washington, a senior from Lexington; Samone Holston, a senior from Itta Bena;  Lakishia Turner, a senior from Herndo; and Patrevias Taylor, a junior from Clarksdale; presented findings from four research projects at the Mid-South Psychology Conference in Memphis on February 25. This was Delta State’s seventh time to attend the conference and third time to win first place in the research competition.

Individual honors went to Washington who was awarded first place for best research poster. Three of the research projects conducted by Washington, Turner, and Taylor were conducted to satisfy a course requirement in the Social Cognition class of Dr. Scott Hutchens, professor of psychology and chair of the Division of Counselor Education and Psychology. Holston’s project was conducted as an independent research project under the supervision of Dr. Scott Drury, assistant professor of psychology. Other universities presenting research at the conference were: The University of Memphis, University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee Martin, Rhodes College, East Tennessee State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Christian Brothers University, Bethel University, and Mississippi University for Women.

Occupation candidacy as a function of facial piercings and gender – presented by Samone Holston (supervisor – Hutchens)
An investigation of impression formation as a function of interracial relationships – presented by Lakishia Turner and Patrevias Taylor (supervisor Hutchens)
