Blues Scholar Scott Barretta scheduled for DMI All Access series

Scott BarrettaThe Delta Music Institute, a music industry studies program at Delta State University, will host Blues scholar Scott Barretta on Monday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the Baioni Center for an interactive discussion as part of the DMI All Access series. DMI All Access is a series of open forums and lectures throughout the academic year featuring industry professionals from various areas of the music business.

Barretta is a principal writer and researcher for the Mississippi Blues Trail, the host of the radio program Highway 61 on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, and a folklorist for the Mississippi Arts Commission. He is the former editor of Living Blues magazine, published by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, has worked as a writer and consultant for the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, and is a freelance writer for many publications. He is the coauthor (with Ken Murphy) of the book Mississippi: State of Blues, as well as a regular columnist for the Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson.

Barretta holds a bachelor’s in sociology from George Mason University, a master’s in sociology from the University of Virginia and is in the dissertation stage for a Ph.D. in sociology from Lund University in Sweden.  His dissertation examines the historical development of white audiences for the blues. Barretta is also currently working on an exhibit on the music of slavery and its legacy.
